It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Dr. James Brewer Stewart, a cherished member of the Advisory Board of the Ida B. Wells Center.
Larry first met Dr. Stewart in their first year at Macalester and reconnected when the Wells Center was established.
A distinguished historian and founding director of the Historians Against Slavery initiative, Dr. Stewart devoted his life to illuminating the history of American slavery and advancing the cause of racial justice. His scholarship, mentorship, and moral clarity shaped generations of students at Macalester College and activists in the community, and his commitment to truth and reconciliation inspired all who had the privilege of working with him.
Dr. Stewart was a staunch supporter of the mission of the Wells Center from the beginning. His guidance and wisdom were invaluable. We honor his legacy by continuing the work to which he dedicated his life. He will be deeply missed.
